Hi there! Welcome to the Philosophy of Social Cognition Reading Group website.

The Philosophy of Social Cognition Reading Group has been established by students at the University of Vienna in Summer Semester 2023. It exists in the no-man’s land between analytic philosophy and cognitive science. It was born out of frustration at the seeming absence of dialogue between these fields. Do we know anything about what others think and feel? And if we do, how do we know it?

Now we’re reading papers about it, and things are getting better! We connect interdisciplinary researchers from all kinds of backgrounds, which means that it is frustrating and we misunderstand each other a lot, but it is also helpful and exciting. We are discussing issues related to Theory of Mind, Simulation Theory, 4E theories, and we generally wonder about folk psychology, representations and the propositional and non-propositional knowledge we have of others. The group is primarily addressed to master and doctoral students, but everybody is welcome to join.

We are meeting every Tuesday of the semester, at 6:30 pm CET, at NIG (3B), but online participation is possible as well. You can find all the relevant information, including the Zoom link, in Meeting Details. For the schedule and the list of papers we are reading, check the Syllabus and Dates tab. For complaints, comments and most importantly praise, please see how to contact us.

If you sign up for the mailing list, a delightful weekly email with the next reading and notes will be delivered directly to your mailbox.

We are looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday!
